Magazine adverts for digipacks.

There is a close up shot of the artist, this represents the band and how he is a key element to selling the music, the focus on him appeals to a wider audience/fan base. Particularly women because he has a certain sex appeal, however the boyish style of the poster shows that it can appeal to both sex's, i think that this type of music would appeal to a younger generation because of the rebellious image the band portrays. The image looks as though it has been taken at a live gig, its a unposed and natural shot of him, however it has been taken so that the artificial lighting reflects off of him, drawing our attention to the artist. The use of mise-en-scene reflects the genre of this band, his dark clothing and makeup are things we would associate with a rock genre. The only prop we see in this image is the microphone, this is highly redundant of this genre and this also tells us he is the lead singer.

The magazine has dark colours as well as elements of red, these are colours  are what we would associate with the genre of music as well as the band. The white fonts against the background connotes the rock and roll, rebellious feel. The 'Green Day' font is their brand identity, we know who the band is when we see the font. The layout of the advert isn't particularly interesting, its very crowded, but it is very informative so its good in a way that you know what your buying. It is entropic in the sense that its not a stereotypical advert, we usually see an image of the whole band and very little information and this is the complete opposite of that. But it is redundant of this particular band because they are alternative and different.

The details on the packaging itself contain links to the bands website and make poverty history, the release date and information on what you get when you purchase the album.

Straight away we are drawn to the mid shot of the artist, the artist is shown on the advert which is key to draw in the audience, because the artist is a female mainstream artist I think this advert would appeal more to a young female audience. The shot is in black and white, this seems to be a theme throughout the artists singles and album. Some elements of the mis-en-scene are quite redundant for example her look and props, like the bird she is wearing is quite redundant of her to have a dramatic and different style.

The white block fonts stand out against the grey background which catches your eye and draws you in to the poster, we wouldn't expect this from a pop genre. Its challenging what we usually would expect from the artist and the genre of music making it entropic. The layout itself is very basic but very informative, again not something you would expect of this genre.

The poster is very detailed, it has a lot of links to lady gaga related sights e.g. social networking. Producers, photographers and who wrote the music. This poster is very likely to appeal to the artists fans because it is so informative and it might be of interest to someone who idolises her.

What i notice straight away is that there are no elements of photography
the band, this isn't that surprising as in comparison to other alternative rock bands e.g. The Killers. Who aren't always on the front cover. The look of the poster would appeal to a younger generation audience but perhaps because its an older generation band the music would appeal to an older audience.

There is  variety of fonts on the poster making it look more interesting, incorporating the orange in the font is a clever and unique idea which will attract people to look at it. The "re-mastered, re-packaged, re-discovered" is in red, white and blue, this links to the fact they are an english band.

The poster is detailed and the information is laid out like a movie poster, it has star ratings from NME and Mojo, is available at itunes and links to their website. This information will persuade the audience to buy this album, these
features are quite redundant as its persuading you.

Analysis of entropic and redundant features.

Gun's N' Roses-Sweet Child O' Mine

Redundant Features:
  • Instruments-In the rock genre we expect to see instruments.
  • Band Performance-In the video the band does a performance, either in a part of the video or during the whole thing.
  • 80's styling-This would have been very predictable of that time era, the 80's rock image is well known.
  • Band logo is seen throughout the video-The logo of Guns N' Roses is well known and it acts as a representation of them (Brand Identity).
Entropic Features:
  • The fade in from colour to black and white.
  • Some movie elements-We see the construction element of the video, which is very unusual. There are many clips where we see the cameras and tracks.
Aerosmith-Don't Wanna Miss A Thing

Redundant Features:
  • Intertexual references to the film "Armageddon"-We expect to see this link because the song was made for the film.
  • Clips of the band (performance)
  • Generic Video-It's exactly what you would expect to see from the genre/artist as well as a film based music video.
Foo Fighters-Walk

Redundant Features:
  • Artist is shown-We expect to see the artist/band, as it promotes their music video.
  • Band Logo is shown-This is the brand identity, and we usually see this in rock music videos e.g. on the drums.
  • You see the whole band perform.
Entropic Features:
  • Long Intro-Usually we expect to hear music.
  • Comedy Aspect-You don't usually expect to find rock videos funny, but this aspect is surprising of this band as the bands other videos are all just performance based.
  • You don't see a performance until the end-Linking with the above, Foo Fighters videos revolve around the performance.
Duran Duran-Girl Panic!

Redundant Features:
  • You do see the band members (only for a small part)
  • Instruments
Entropic Features:

  • Movie Style-There is a movie like introduction at the start, it tells us the production and who the band is.
  • The main focus isn't on the band, they are only subtly featured-Women are playing the band members, which is a different approach to a music video.
  • Sound-The first sound we hear is dialogue, which is unexpected as we expect to hear music.
  • Interview-The band members are being interviewed throughout the video.

Taylor Swift-You Belong With Me

A link between lyrics and visuals: A the beginning of the music video there is a clear link between what we are hearing and what we are seeing, Taylor Swift sings about a boy she likes which is amplified throughout the video.

"She's cheer captain"

"And I'm on the bleachers"

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics: Although Taylor Swift is a mainstream pop artist, not all the predictable elements you would find usually in a pop video are there, so the music video is entropic in a way. What I can see is that the artist is featured and singing in the music video, which is a redundant feature as the artist is there to sell the music. Another redundant feature is the love interest, which is quite stereotypical of this genre as well as the artist herself. I have found that with a lot of music videos there is usually a focus on a boy/girl interest.

The demands of the record label mean that there will be a lot of focus on the artist: What is clear is that there is a lot of focus on the artist, Taylor Swift is the main focus of the video. There are a lot of close ups and mid-shots of her, and she is in the majority of shots in the video.

There is frequently reference to the notion of looking: What is redundant of most music videos is that there is a certain element that draws our attention to the video. I think with this video is it is how Taylor Swift is playing two characters, and this is quite entropic of her as her music videos are usually quite serious and not humorous.

Introduction

In my A2 coursework, I have to promote an unsigned band by creating a music video, digi-pack and market the band.  Whilst I am doing this I will be updating the blog with my notes and how I am getting on, because we have to create the music video in a group I will be working with Holly Hughes and Beth Harwood. We have chosen our song for the music video and it's called "Let's All Go Away" by the Heroes of Hanoi.
